Submission Guide
 Please Note:
Starting July 1st, 2010, we are switching to Submishmash.
Please follow the link below for all submissions.
If you submitted by email in June, or earlier, then your submission is fine,
and we will get back to you soon.

Submission Guidelines:

FaW accepts submissions all year.

Details about our submissions requirements are below.

Short Shorts word limit: 300

Issue word limit: 750

Formatting: For all submissions, both fiction and art, the name of the file should be the title of the story.

For all fiction submissions, the first things in the document should be the story title and the word count, like this:

"Ziggurat"
387 words

The text should be 12 point, and double spaced.

In the "Cover Letter or Bio" field, please paste a short bio, of no more than 50 words. The bio can be a simple list of publications, or a link, or something else entirely. If there is anything else we need to know (like that we should use a penname), that information should go after the bio. Neither a salutation nor closing is needed. In fact, they are discouraged.

Previously Published Stories: NO (What does this mean? It means we should not be able to find your story anywhere, online or in print. That means anywhere. Not on your blog, not on Fictionaut, not anywhere.)

Simultaneous Submissions: YES,
BUT: Our response time averages around 3 days. If you are submitting to other journals with quick response times, then it might make more sense to send to only one at a time. We have had stories withdrawn as little as 2 days after they were submitted. Of course, writers should do what is in their best interest, not a journal's, but withdrawing a bunch of stories 10 minutes after submission seems like more work for everyone, writer included. (How do you figure out if a journal responds quickly? Follow the link below to Duotrope, and look up the journal.)

Multiple Submissions: YES, they are allowed, but not recommended.

Response Time: The current average for stories submitted in 2010 is 3.0 days.

(Note: We almost always respond quickly, but if you are curious about your submission, you will be able to check it's status in Submishmash.)

Rights: First publication, plus archiving, and non-exclusive anthology. In addition to those rights, we ask that you do not make the piece available elsewhere for three months.

Pay: Not at the moment.

Contact: If you have any questions or comments, contact us at fictionatwork@gmail.com (but not for submissions; see the link to the right for submissions).

Last But Not Least: Please report your submissions to Duotrope. We work hard to reply quickly, and this site is a way for us to let people know that we are quick responders.

Clicking on the grey button will take you to our page at Duotrope, and from there you can report your submission, sign up for their service (it's free), and study-up on other markets.

Thanks!

Submissions:

When you are ready to submit, follow the link below to Submishmash.

Remember, if you have ever submitted to ANY journal through Submishmash then you already have a Submishmash account. No more setting up separate accounts with every damn magazine. Isn't that great?
